Rare and very hard to find, limited edition photobook by Martin Parr, Dan Holdsworth, Sarah Pickering and Paul Shambroom. The content explores the culture and economy of Cardiff, Wales (publication specifically commissioned for this purpose).
Each photographer was commissioned to document in their own way the culture and economy of Cardiff, investigating the dynamics of consumer culture, community and 'place':
Martin Parr's contribution was to document Working Men's Clubs in Cardiff, continues his long-standing interest with working men's clubs in South Wales.
Dan Holdsworth was commissioned to portray the mock-up of St Davids 2 (SD2), built in the hinterlands of Cardiff.
Sarah Pickering chose to photograph the museum spectacle and tourism which are visually connected with the theatre of commerce.
Paul Shambroom celebrates a microcosm of democratic power in the small committee meetings that take place in village halls, schools and community centres.
The images are accompanied by an essay by renowned curators Russell Roberts and Emma M Price.
The publication is large format (290 x 390mm) and comes in seven parts, including 4 large scale posters (980mm wide) by Paul Shambroom and Dan Holdsworth, and two loose leaf magazines by Sarah Pickering and Martin Parr.
It’s packaged in custom printed bright yellow polyurethane as illustrated, sealed with a variety of coloured stickers in the style of a traditional wax seal.
The publication was supported by University of Wales, Newport, St David’s, Safle and the European Centre for Photographic Research.
